Barclays Bank privileges internet security issues. It has at its disposal a modern technology as well as adequate controls that focus on several levels: secure communications utilization, regular intrusion/analysis monitoring tests. These are some of the control mechanisms that the Bank uses to assure the right security for all the BarclaysNet Clients.

However, due to the evolution of internet frauds sophistication and repetition, it’s important to alert our Clients for a list of precautions that shall rule in order to assure, by them, a correct and safe operation.

You should read carefully the following security recommendations, and take them into account while using internet and specially, BarclaysNet:

Protect your computer…

  • Install one Antivirus Software and keep it permanently updated. Most of the Antivirus Software allows free updates on the internet assuring a permanent protection against the recent developed virus.

  • Install a Firewall in your computer. Only this way you will be able to filter and control the computer traffic while you’re connected to the internet.

    The Windows XP - SP2 (service pack 2) version already counts with an improved firewall as well as improved measures concerning your computer security while connected to the internet.
    For those who already have a Windows XP license, you can download this update free of charge at the Microsoft website.

  • Always use properly licensed software and update regularly the operative system as well as the browser.
    Install the main fabricants last updates by means of the links below accordingly to the software you use:

    Protect your Security Codes…

    BarclaysNet already has at its disposal means of control about the composition of your security codes, as well as implies the regular changing of your password. However, you always should take into account the following principles:

  • Never type your security codes unless you’re at the Barclays website, Verisign certified. Do not reveal or write them in a way that they can be consulted by others: for example, in e-mails.

  • Always keep your security codes reserved. Do not reveal them even if asked in Barclays name. Barclays Bank, in any circumstances, will ask its Clients their security codes outside its website.

  • If you receive any information request concerning your security codes, by e-mail or any other mean, do not respond and inform the Bank immediately (if it is a request via e-mail, you should forward it to contact.center.pt @ barclays.com and erase it immediately from your computer).

  • Do not choose security codes of easy detection. Although BarclaysNet already validates some combinations as sequences, characters repetitions, or user’s code conjugations, you should also avoid codes such as: football clubs, your first or family name, or any other that might be of easy detection.

  • If your browser (Internet Explorer, Netscape or other) gives you the choice of saving the passwords, you should confirm that this option is notactivated. If necessary, contact a Barclays Assistant for support.

  • Barclays Bank will never ask you more then once the coordinates of your Contact Card. If that happens, please inform the Bank immediately (if it is a request via e-mail, you should forward it to
    contact.center.pt @ barclays.com and erase it immediately from your computer).

    Using BarclaysNet…

  • Never enter at BarclaysNet using links or e-mails from other sites.
    Use only the links provided at the Barclays website (address starting with http://www.barclays.pt).

  • Always use a safe computer whose access/utilization you trust
    . Other wise, you may be target off bad intentioned people and expose your security codes or even the information you see via BarclaysNet.

  • Always read your Welcome message,
    atBarclaysNet, and confirm the date and hour of your user last registered access. In case of any irregularity contact the Bank immediately.

  • Never leave your computer while logged-on to a BarclaysNet session.
    Always remember to disable your safe session, using the “Exit” button before leaving.

    Protect yourself on the Internet…

  • Avoid the access to apparently seducing links , for example: services, software, games or any other free offers, and always refuse solicited permissions for installation of any kind of applicative, plug-in, etc.

  • Be wise and do not open e-mails of doubtful/unknown origin. Not even open or execute any kind of attached file, and mostly, never reveal any kind of personal information, even if requested by an apparently reliable source.

  • Do not execute or download software, games, etc if you’re not sure of its context or origin.
